The school was established as a joint initiative of the Max-Planck-Institute of Molecular Physiology in Dortmund, the TU Dortmund, the Ruhr-University-Bochum and the University of Duisburg-Essen.

All four institutes are located in the Ruhr Metropolitan Area of Germany, an extremely vibrant and culturally interconnected region. The same spirit is reflected in the science of our program: research groups, with different and often complementary approaches, combine their efforts to study at the molecular level basic cell physiology.

The strength of the IMPRS-CMB program lies in the close interaction between three disciplines: Chemistry, which provides the tools for manipulating biomolecules and cells in a targeted manner; Biophysics, which allows the elucidation of cellular properties on a structural and functional level and Systems Biology, which provides insight into the architecture, regulation and function of cells.
